5am Car Wash

Words and Music: Czara de la Llana

Tonight the sun hides
And wishing stars take flight
The moon heaves, waiting
As fireflies glow bright
Beneath the see of stars d’you think of me
My peaceful bumblebee
In dreams remember me
I wonder when he’ll look at me and then
With me his life he’ll spend
My worried heart he’ll mend

Look into these eyes, oh baby
And tell me have I grown
Won’t you take my soul oh darling
And keep it as your own

If I had a wish
Granted to me
What would it be
Oh Lord, I know it’s true
He heals my mind
It’s him I will find
To open my heart

I want to know
If you’re thirsty for my love
And if you hunger
For my inviting touch
Take me from this lonely world
And I’ll show you a love before you’ve never known
I hope that we
Oh hand in hand we’ll see
Our love was meant to be
So let your heart go free

Notes:

Originally written for Two Headed Chang

Title derived from a story Francis told Czara.

Elsie

Words and Music: Czara de la Llana

I wonder when they all will see
The stunning beauty inside me
A little girl is screaming
Can you feel my tortured soul tonight

I wonder when they all will see
The bubbly laughter inside me
And someday maybe they’ll say
Girl you’re cool and oh so out of sight

I couldn’t deny
That they will never see the light
And now I will fly
To where the devil sleeps at night
I’ll say goodbye

D’you think that when you laugh with me
I laugh at all the things you see
I wish to God I’d shown you
My cruel and isolated heart

I want to be near you
But I won’t let it be that way
I’m sorry I’m falling
Deteriorating everyday
The madness the sadness
Do you hear me laugh and scream and cry
I’m hurting I’m dying
You don’t think that I can tell you why

Notes:

Originally written for Two Headed Chang

Inspired by our dear friend, Jay Jamoral (RIP)

Title derived from the first initial of Le-Van and Czara’s names

Lite Beer

Words: Czara de la Llana
Music: Czara de la Llana, Bong Emaas

Take me from my dreams tonight
And give to me my heart
Once together, we will never part
Fantasy and birthday flight
Forever it will be
Each childhood wish was always
You and me

Would you be my sun
And radiate
Would you be my moon
And undulate
Would you be my angel, baby
And spread your wings
To be with me, my love

Would you be the song
My soul will sing
Would you be the tear
My laughter brings
Would you be my hero, baby
And chase the stars
To be with me, my love

Wish me far from here tonight
And in your arms my love
Can you feel my soul from up above
Breathe into me the life I seek
And save me from my fears
The magic you’ll see
When you hold me near

Notes:

Originally written for Two Headed Chang

Why that title? We don’t know either

Words: Mike Dizon
Music: Mike Dizon, Rosemarie Santos, Andrew Taruc

Turn this night into day
Friendship lasts for one more day
Past forgotten turn it my way
Want this friendship for one more day

Many people joined by love
Turned into lust and necessity
Money, greed, name and fame
What has happened
It feels like rain

Clouded thoughts fill my mind
Empty words and empty rhymes
Torn apart by senseless pride
Too late now nowhere to hide

Notes:

Originally for Six Years Into, written during a ‘moment of clarity’

Marvin’s Forehead

Words and Music: Czara de la Llana

Lying on a velvet green
On a shady afternoon
Tears welled up in my eyes
Clueless darkness deepens
Invade the soul
But I’ll take it on my own

Entice the creeping moonlight
Delay the fear
The screeching pavement cries
Pillowfights and moonlit talks
I’ve all outgrown
But I’ll listen on my own

I understand that you never wanted
To leave me all by myself
A love affair not anticipated
Why couldn’t we see it through
I understand that you never wanted
To leave me lost and alone
To face the demons forever haunting
Now what am I to do

Because my friend
Can’t you see what you’ve done to me
You did this out of spite
And oh me oh my sanity
How do I sleep tonight

Notes:

Originally written for Two-Headed Chang

This song has a killer bass line

Another Year

Words: Rosemarie Santos
Music: Rosemarie Santos, Andrew Taruc

In the dark
I thought I’d find my way
Must have thought for the light of day
Beneath the rubble way

What must I say
What must I ask
Just for today
The things I wondered
To ask the answers
I already have

Who would have thought
That I was all alone
Try to think of the words I’ll say
But he knew them all along

Thoughts of fears
Signs and trails of doubt
Nothing lies behind the sun
Just a sunny day

Notes:

Originally written for Six Years Into

Firefly

Words: Rosemarie Santos, Conrad Santos, Andrew Taruc
Music: Rosemarie Santos, Andrew Taruc

When I see you
I glow up like a firefly
When you touch me
The feelings stay inside
One look from your eyes
The world ain’t just the same
And my heart melts when I see you smile

I will never leave you
So don’t ever be afraid

When I’m with you
I fly up so high
The love you give me
Money just can’t buy
Whisper in my ear
And fly with me tonight
Don’t let me go
‘Cuz I won’t let you go

Tell me what you feel
Oh baby tell me now
You know it’ll hurt me
To see you cry tonight
The love you give me
I cherish it so much
To be with you is all I want

Notes:

The original arrangement is played using two bass guitars

Pedro Gil now performs a reggae/punk version of this song

Words: Drew de Ramos, Andrew Taruc
Music: Rosemarie Santos Andrew Taruc

What’s the point of going on and on
When I don’t have you beside me
It’s so hard to admit it hurts
When you’re not here with me

Take your time, I’ll wait
Don’t rush, I’m here

I could never read your mind
The red and blues intertwine
Swirling dizzily into a daze
It reminds me of you

Tell me the story of you and me
The story that lifts me
The story that makes me feel good
Don’t be shy
I’m here waiting for you
Hold my hand and stand with me
How can I make you try

Hello, can’t you see
That our love was meant to be
Did you know
The starts were made for you and me

I can’t believe that you can’t see
The hints I give you
Do you need more or are you just too cold
Caught up in your own dreams
You’ll be sorry when I’m gone

Words and Music: Czara de la Llana

The evening stars they play with me
Understanding what my dreams are meant to be
But reality comes sinking in
And I realize that you can’t rescue me

The morning sun it likes to play with me
Understanding what I wish for day to day
But then reality comes crashing in
And I realize that you can’t be with me

Don’t you know that you should be the one
Show me everything beneath the sun
But in the morning I wake up alone
Don’t you know that you should hold me near
Sweet nothings whisper in my ear
But in the morning I wake up alone

Honestly my love
Promise me my love
It’s you and me my love
Forever

Notes:

Recorded in March 2004, sometime around 2:30AM.
Czara was testing Mario’s new recording console.

What were the events that led us to make sweet music? How did each of us end up here? Do you even care?

Pedro Gil is a hybrid of two bands formed in the late 90s: Six Years Into and Two-Headed Chang.

Six Years Into. Indie pop/alternative with a hint of new wave. Formed in early 1998, the band started as a four-piece, which did not work out; according to Andrew, “none of us can sing… we tried but it was so awful!” 6yi’s first gig was opening for the Eraserheads on their 1998 Sticker Happy Parade U.S. Tour. What followed was a series of gigs here and there, organized by Le-Van de Guzman (of bootleg! fame) and Barnard Panuga (Gage Street). The band included Paola (vocals), Rose (bass), Andrew (guitars/bass), Mike (guitars), Drew (drums), and Barnard (percussion/synth). In 1999, Paola left 6yi; they tried a few prospective vocalists, but none worked out, so they laid low for a while and eventually put the entire thing on hold.

Two-Headed Chang. Four-piece indie pop/alternative band influenced by britpop. Formed in mid-1999, 2hc’s first major gig was at Gage Street’s Himigsikan ’99. In mid-2000, 2hc, like 6yi, was eventually put on hold, as everybody started to get busy with work and school. The band included Czara (vocals/guitars), Janina (bass), JunJun (guitars), and Haro (drums).

Ladies and Gentlemen, Pedro Gil. Thanksgiving 2001. Thanks to Andrew’s persistence, the remaining members of 2hc and 6yi (sans Rose, pregnant, Drew, in Japan, and Mike, somewhere out there) decided to get things going. LIA (Lost In America, Andrew’s other band) was invited to play at piNoisepop in Berkeley, CA. The band decided to pass on the opportunity, so Andrew suggested the 6yi/2hc hybrid. The line-up originally included Eric Delena on guitar, but due to scheduling conflicts, things didn’t work out. A week before the scheduled Berkeley gig, Mike joined Pedro Gil.

Hello, Goodbye. Yes, we are notorious for having a long history of band members. Here are a few notables:

February 2002: Drew (fresh from Japan) joined the group as a percussionist.

October 2002: Barnard fell in love and moved to New York. He was eventually replaced by Paolo de la Victoria, who played with the band during the Parokya Ni Edgar and Jologz Fezt: 3-Peat shows. Between November 2002 and May 2003, the band had no drummer but was still arranging songs and rehearsing.

May 2003: Mario Torres joined the band as a permanent drummer and kept us rockin out for years until he left in September 2008

July 2004: Janina and Drew are off to greener pastures. Janina is replaced by far*out’s Charles Gray.

Why the heck are we called PEDRO GIL?

12.21.01
Eric’s Birthday Treat at Max’s in Glendale. There was a roundtable dicussion about where we grew up in the Philippines; someone mentioned a street named Pedro Gil. Andrew looked at Czara and said that would be a cool band name. Groggy and dying from the flu, Czara nodded… can you see the drama unfold?

Christmas Break, 2001.
The Six Years Into/Two-Headed Chang nameless hybrid started practicing for a January 19th gig. We don’t know when it happened, but Andrew suggested Pedro Gil again. It did sound cool, so we went for it. In the beginning, the name was spelled H-I-L-L; later on, James pointed out that it is actually *ahem* G-I-L.

Thanks James. It’s cooler that way.

Pedro Gil
(1889 – 1965)
Physician, Crusading Journalist and Legislator

One of the architects of Philippine independence from the United States, Pedro Gil lived a crowded life of service in different distinguished roles – as a labor leader, as a doctor of medicine who practiced his professions as a means of aiding the laboring masses, as a crusading newspaperman with a vitriolic pen, as a social worker with a big heart for the needy, and as a conscientious legislator.

Born in Capiz, Capiz on November 13, 1889, he was the youngest of the seven children of Pedro Gil, Sir. and Petra Hernandez. His father, a Spaniard, was an employee of the government in Capiz. His mother died when he was hardly six months old, and he was brought to Manila and reared in the home of his sisters in Ermita. He was eight years old when his father died.

The Gils were not wealthy, and left no fortune to their children. But in spite of their difficulties, his brothers and sisters managed to send him to the Escuela Normal de San Javier, where he completed a commercial course. How he was able to do that was a story of hardship and sacrifices. To support him through his studies his sisters accepted some sewing work. He himself did odd jobs for the school’s Jesuit priest and so was exempted from paying tuition fees.

Gil next enrolled at the San Juan de Letran, where he eared his Bachelor of Arts degree. He then proceeded to take up medicine at the University of Santo Tomas, supporting himself by teaching at the Instituto de Burgos in the evening. In due time, he finished the course, passed the examination given by the Board of Medical Practitioners, and established a clinic which immediately became popular with the masses of Paco and Ermita.

Dr. Gil started his political career as a rabid oppositionist. Even while he was still a student, he was already closely identified with opposition groups. He was an active writer on political subjects and a frequent leader of movements censuring the party then in power for abuses in the government. He once led a strike against Meralco.

Ever eager to reach the masses, he published a newspaper dedicated to the laboring classes, Los Obreros. When it folded up, he edited a number of others, like La Nacion. He directed this last newspaper until 1923.

When the Jones Law was still pending in Congress, he organized mass meetings and in a popular manifestation, led in the signing of a manifesto urging the legislative body to include in the said law “a definite date for independence.”

In 1927, he was elected representative for the south district of Manila on the Democratra party ticket. He became Minority Floor Leader in the House of representatives and distinguished himself as a fiscalizer of the abused and the tyranny of those in power. He was designated member of the 1930 independence mission to the United states and stayed for some time in Washington, D.C. together with Osmena, Roxas, Montinola, and Tirona. This mission is credited with having worked for the passage of the first independence law for the Philippines.

He was elected to the first National assembly and became chairman of the committee on the city government and several other important committees.

As an assemblyman, he worked tooth and nail for the reduction of public utility rates in the city of Manila, such as those charged by Meralco and the Manila Gas Corporation. He himself presented a test case against them with the Public Service Commission. Arguing that their rates were “boom period” rates and needed to be reduced, he offered comprehensive statistics to show that Manila residents were paying more than they should for gas and electric power services. He stressed that the current rates were too heavy for the poor to shoulder.

Likewise, he pioneered the movement for higher wages for laborers, authoring a bill to this effect.

Dr. Gil served as envoy to Argentina from 1959 to 1962 and was a recipient of the General San Martin medal, Argentina’s highest diplomatic award.

He was married to Consuelo Cabangis. They had only one child, Patria, who became the wife of Deogracias Puyat, a lawyer.

He died on January 5, 1965.
